Argument Against Measure H

Vote No on H to STOP the REPEAL of Renter Protections and Rent Stabilization!

Measure H prioritizes the interests of corporate landlords over the needs of seniors, hardworking families, educators, and single parents. It strips Salinas renters of critical protections, and eliminates rent stabilization, a key solution to displacement and homelessness. That’s why renters, educators, health providers, and labor all support NO on Measure H.

Salinas doesn’t have a problem with renter protections and rent stabilization. What we have is a corporate landlord problem. Why are out-of-state, multibillion dollar fortune 500 companies, trying to influence the 2026 election and the housing market for low-income Salinas Renters?

UDR, Inc. the biggest contributor to Measure H at $78,250 is one of the largest corporate landlords in the United States, and pours money into local elections across the country to stop rent control and renter protections. UDR, Inc. owns 1,565 apartments in Salinas. The kinds of protections that Salinas passed in 2024 prevent corporations like UDR, Inc. from displacing existing residents to redevelop older apartment stock and turn them into higher income condos. Measure H only serves the interests of large landlords who don’t want to be held accountable to basic tenant rights.

Corporations like UDR, Inc. and the California Realtor Association want voters to believe we have to give up renter rights in order to have other housing solutions, but the truth is— renter rights and rent stabilization work hand-in-hand with production and preservation of affordable housing to address the housing crisis in Salinas. Protecting our rights is non-negotiable! The protections that Measure H aims to repeal are helping to prevent the agenda of corporations like UDR from displacing the families that are the backbone of our community and local economy.

Don’t be fooled by their Big Lies

Claiming the rental registry, a tool to hold absentee landlords accountable to basic tenant rights, is a “database of renters” is disinformation designed to confuse voters.

Measure H does not create or fund deposit assistance or an emergency rent program. It does not authorize or fund new housing. Measure H repeals four Salinas rental ordinances: rent stabilization, tenant protections and just-cause eviction rules, anti-harassment protections, and rental registration. That is what is on the ballot!

Just follow the money: The Measure H campaign is funded primarily by corporate landlords that live outside Salinas.

Cities across California are strengthening renter protections and embracing rent stabilization to increase affordability. Demand responsible governance and real solutions in Salinas: Rent stabilization and tenant protections working hand in hand with production and preservation of affordable housing. Vote NO to STOP big money from taking away such a critical part of the affordability solution.

VOTE NO on H!
